First Aid for Burn Injuries
Thursday, October 1st, 2009
Burns are the most common injuries that we have to deal with in our daily lives. We should be well prepared to treat a burn immediately to make it less effective. It is imperative that we know all about the first aid treatment of burn injuries.
Burn injuries can occur in different ways. It can be due to heat from fire or a hot mug. It can also happen while cooking. There are burns due to different chemicals. This mainly happens in labs and with people who deal chemicals. You can also get burnt from electricity. Sunburns and burns from other radiations are also a common way that it occurs.
Most of us suffer 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns. The burns where only the upper most layer of the skin is affected is known as first degree burn and likewise when 2 and 3 layers of tissue is burnt it is known as 2nd and 3rd degree burn.
We need to make sure that we do not do anything that we should not while treating a burn injury. Burns normally will inflict pain to the injured person unless it is a 3 rd degree burn where the nerve tissues are affected. There are a few things we must avoid doing while treating a burnt person. We should not touch or cough a burn. Breaking blisters is strictly prohibited. We tend to remove the clothing of the burnt places but we should not. Do not use butter or other oily treatments on the burn unless it is a sun burn. Avoid applying cotton or wool dressing on the burnt spot. Do not cool the burn too much.
The very first thing you need to do is ask for permission, before you go ahead and treat the victim. Assure him that you are a trained first aid provider. Cool the burn and clean it with cool and clean water. If it is a chemical burn apply enough water in the burnt area for about 20 minutes. If the chemical is powder, brush it away before applying water.
Remove all the loose clothing and jewelry from the burnt place before the burn swells. But never try to remove something that is stuck in the place. Apply dressing after the pain is reduced. Apply tape at the top of the dressing but do not let it touch it the burnt place. If you have specialized burn dressing use it as per the direction.
Keep the victim under watch and treat them for the aftershock. Keep them in good sense till the medical service arrives.
